Using the microbiome -- the trillions of helpful bacteria that make a home inside the human gut -- to prevent, treat and diagnose disease will be named the top medical innovation for 2017 today at the Cleveland Clinic's annual Medical Innovation Summit. A panel of Clinic physicians chose the top 10 innovations, to be unveiled to the more than 1,600 doctors, entrepreneurs and industry leaders attending the 14th annual summit at the Huntington Convention Center. The top medical innovations are expected to have the biggest impacts on the field in the coming year. Among this year's innovations are automated care safety features expected to save thousands of lives, absorbable stents, and 3-D technology that's allowing eye and brain surgeons a better view of their work.
